 Bio

Tsering Dorjee, also known as Tsering Bawa, is an award-winning actor and a distinguished performer in Tibetan music and arts, with over thirty years of experience in the field.

He earned a Master’s degree in Tibetan Performing Arts in 2000 from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) in Dharamsala, India, where he had the privilege to learn from some of the most celebrated Tibetan artists.

At TIPA, Tsering immersed himself in Tibetan secular dance and music, progressing from student to instructor. He has since mastered Tibetan Opera, encompassing various forms of folk dance and Cham (secret dance), characterized by vibrant, masked ritual performances at significant Tibetan festivals.

Tsering has traveled extensively to share his expertise worldwide and frequently appears on major Tibetan media outlets, inspiring audiences to engage with Tibetan culture.

Furthering his acting education, he trained in France, the Netherlands, India, and the United States, particularly at the Barbizon International School of Acting and Modeling in San Francisco.

His film career includes notable works, such as the Oscar-nominated film *Himalaya* (1999). Tsering has collaborated with acclaimed composers like Michael Becker, contributing to the original soundtrack of the Emmy-winning documentary *Women of Tibet – A Quiet Revolution* (2009).

In 2003, he performed in the children’s theater production *Tibet Through the Red Box* by David Henry Hwang at the Seattle Children’s Theatre, returning for performances in 2006 at Cape Rep Theatre in Massachusetts.

From 2014 to 2017, Tsering served as a cultural consultant and choreographer, performing at Lincoln Center Theater in New York in the world premiere of Sarah Ruhl’s *The Oldest Boy*, as well as at the Marin Theater Company, San Diego Rep Theatre, and Jungle Theater in Minneapolis.

In 2022-23, he starred in the groundbreaking Tibetan international play *Pah-Lak*, written by Abhishek Majumdar, premiering at the TIPA auditorium in Dharamsala. The play has been showcased in major Indian cities, including the Prithvi Theatre Festival in Mumbai and the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa.

In 2023, Tsering toured Europe as the lead actor in *Pah-Lak*, participating in the International Theatre Festival at Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen and performing in 21 shows across nine cities in Germany and Switzerland.

He received a nomination for Outstanding Male Performance in a Play at the 2015 Craig Noel Awards in San Diego, and he won the award for Outstanding Choreography at the 2016 San Francisco Theater Bay Area Awards.

Tsering co-produced and starred in the independent feature film *My Son Tenzin*, directed by Tasshi Wangchuk and produced by Seykhar Films, which explores the tensions between traditional and modern Tibetan culture.

In 2024, he appeared in the Tamil blockbuster *Demonte Colony 2*, directed by R. Ajay Gnanamuthu, playing a significant role as Daushi.

Recently, in 2025, Tsering was featured in the film *100 Sunset* by Kunsang Kyirong, which was selected for the Discovery section of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Throughout his impressive career, Tsering has also collaborated with renowned institutions such as UCLA, University of Washington, U.C. Berkeley, and San Francisco State University, serving as a Tibetan arts and cultural lecturer and consultant.

Since 2007, he has established a community school program in the Bay Area focused on Tibetan language, music, and dance, aimed at preserving Tibet’s artistic traditions for future generations.
